What happens when a lifelong football obsession turns into an eleven-month, 120-match journey?
From Broxburn to Brazil follows Jim Eccleston through an extraordinary season of football travel, from the quirky community grounds of the Scottish non-league game to some of Europe’s great stadiums and the passionate football cultures of South America.
At the heart of the story is St Johnstone. Relegated from the Scottish Premiership before the journey began, Saints embark on a memorable Championship campaign as Jim follows them home and away, sharing the hopes, frustrations, humour and eventual celebrations of a remarkable season.
But this is much more than a story about one club. Across 120 matches, Jim travels thousands of miles, discovering new grounds, revisiting old favourites and experiencing football in all its wonderfully varied forms. The matches provide the destination, but just as important are the journeys, places, supporters, traditions, unexpected encounters and occasional mishaps along the way.
Written largely as events happened, From Broxburn to Brazil is part football diary, part travelogue and part love letter to watching the game live. It captures what makes being a football supporter about so much more than the 90 minutes on the pitch — and why travelling somewhere new to watch 22 people chase a ball can still feel like an adventure. It includes colour photographs throughout which helps bring the stories to life.
With a Foreword from actor and St Johnstone supporter Colin McCredie.
